Moulin Rouge

For Moulin Rouge, a Milo and crew and a Soft Image 3d system were flown to Australia to work with director Baz Luhrmann. The 2-month model shoot involved matching previously shot scenes and blending them with model backgrounds.

Pre-Visualisations were created so that the pace and 'feel' of all the moves could be established. Many of the scenes involved matching from one live action plate, through a model scene and ending up on another live action plate.

The original plate photography was scanned and tracked and the relative scene data imported into the motion control 3D Soft Image system. Soft Image then scaled the moves and used custom software to plot a camera path in space that could be applied to the Motion control rig.

Exact scale models had been positioned on set according to their real size counterparts and were then referenced by the motion control system and that data was used by Soft Image to find the path for the motion control move. Relevant passes and effects were shot which included mattes, lighting changes, season changes etc.
